Donald Judd 'Untitled, 1978-79'

Donald Judd (American 1928-1994)
Untitled, 1978-79
Aquatint on etching paper
Signed and numbered 8/175 in pencil (there were also 15 artist's proofs)
Published by the artist, with the blind stamp of printer, Styria Studio, New York
With full margins, unframed. 35 1/4 x 24 5/8in (89.5 x 62.5cm/plate). 40 x 29 1/2in (101.6 x 74.9cm/sheet).

This aquatint is from the 1978-79 untitled set of 15 aquatints in black (Schellmann 87-101), in which Judd explored different permutations of unprinted white paper lines against a black aquatinted parallelogram shape. The format is one familiar from two of his earliest series of woodcuts begun in 1961, one printed in cadmium red (Schellmann 37-62) and the other in cerulean blue (Schellmann 63-74). He later returned to this format in a series of 27 line etchings begun in 1983 (Schellmann 126-152).
